Summary

This week I focused on construction documents for a historic library renovation at the University of South Carolina. I have very little experience in historic preservation so this was very informative for me and a great learning experience. It wasn’t necessarily glamorous work but very important and I appreciated the lessons I learned. I worked closely with the project architect to identify holes in the construction documents and then address them as required. I also got to do a small design exercise in coming with a piece of casework that would encompass the new fan coil units under the window in the main library. This was fun to come up with a new element to the project that fit nicely into the context. I created multiple options including elevations and detail sections to review with firm leadership. After discussion, I was charged with incorporating the chosen design into the CD’s. It was a very educational process.

Work Sample

Project Title: USC Caroliniana Library Renovation

Project Location: University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC)

Project Scope: Historic preservation interior remodel

Project Manager: Alison Dawson

Role of the Student: Construction Documents production

Description of Images: I’ve included an exterior elevation of the library. The exterior elevations are an important piece to the construction documents in a project of this nature. It’s very important that the work we do to the exterior is in line with the character of the building.
