Novus – Week Five: Feb. 10th – 14th – Week Six: Feb. 17th – 21st

My experience during week five at Novus.

Monday, Feb. 10th

  • Weekly Staff meeting at 8:30 A.M. Very short meeting. Updates on office renovations and status of various electrical related issues throughout the office. Most of the morning was slow due to IT and Electrician working to fix some issues.
  • Continued working on Hematology.

3.5 – Hematology – AXP Project Development & Documentation

Tuesday, Feb. 11th

  • Continuing work on Hematology and red lines. Finished, for the most part, floor plan changes that are pending review from Lee Ann. Began working on millwork elevation sheets by adding material tags, dimensions, and other notations for the CD set. Working towards sending final plan changes.

Wednesday, Feb. 12th

  • Weekly Medley Meeting. Many people were out of office. Discussed switching persons to help on other projects.
  • Continued working on the Hematology project, picked up NEW red lines and spent some time writing/checking meeting minutes to submit to client for approval of plan changes. Gained this opportunity to understand Novus’ formal process of submitting things to a client, as well as learned how to professionally document meetings and keep track of work to be done.
  • Lunch and learn meeting instructed by Novus BIM manager Andrew to review topics of life safety and BIM management regarding drawings, modeling, and improvements to the office-wide standard. Learned interesting insights into BIM management. Although I have not yet experienced the issues discussed, I gained insight on some of the issues everyone deals with on representing certain components in Revit and how they translate to consultants’ work and CD sets.

  • Worked on plan changes to hematology. Helped decide depth of an exam room as well as layout of a phlebotomy space. Designed millwork, touchdown stations, phlebotomy bays, and space for future medical equipment. Consulted on layout of semi-private transfusion spaces, seating, and millwork.

Reflection:

Novus’ Always New principle resonated throughout my week with each day having something new going on. From unexpected electrical issues as a result of office renovations to finishing red lines to immediately receiving floor plan changes that resulted in red lines over the work I just completed the day before. I feel I got the whole architecture office-life experience this week.

Reflection:

This week was an exercise in managing time well. The red-line work and meeting deadlines are still tasks to be done even if I miss a day in the office. I still had things on my plate so I shifted some hours to work all day in the office. The experience was good in preparing me for later when I hopefully continue to work full-time. Time management from part-time to full-time work is very different and I enjoyed the chance to flex my schedule with studio and work this week. I think I’m far more productive working a whole day tackling one job instead of switching gears between school and internship work.
