Mackenzie Abernethy: Weekly Blog #4

Deer Park Middle School Portable
2263 Otranto Rd, North Charleston, SC
Project Scope: One of our project architects is working on moving and renovating 5 new portables from different public schools within CCSD.
Project Manager: Mike Nixon
Role of Student: Creating base sheet sets in AutoCAD for the project manager and contractor to use in their site visit at the end of the week.
What I have learned: I realized that not everything is moving into Revit.  AutoCAD is still very much in use in offices today.  Having drawings is vital for site visits.  I realized that taking a notepad with you when you are making very small, specific changes is much more confusing that just having a basic, empty floorplan.  Even though portables don’t seem like a big project, they still require the paperwork, coordination, and planning that a large project does (just scaled down quite a bit).  I think that was what shocked me the most this week.  These portables have very minimal changes but all of the sheets and files I worked on for this seemed pretty extensive.  Architects do a wide range of projects in their daily work, from small trailers to huge elementary schools.
