Summary
Hard to believe I am finished at Liollio. It’s very bittersweet as I’m excited to be wrapping up an exciting semester and moving on to the next thing, but I will sorely miss my coworkers at Liollio. I had a great last week. I only worked Wednesday and Thursday as I only had two days’ worth of hours left and everyone was out of the office Monday and Tuesday for a conference. My last assignment was to help with the design of a new science and technology building for Midlands Tech in Columbia. I was given a blank slate in a way to come up with a design that would become a statement building for the campus. There were some interesting challenges with the site. For example, where the building would be located was right next to a large mechanical yard that could not be moved. It was also set 15 below the adjacent center of campus. This made for some interesting changes in grade that had to be dealt with. The design I came up with was an attempt to negotiate this change in elevation in an interesting way. I proposed a large exterior staircase that cut through the middle of the building to avoid the mechanical yard. It was pretty well received by the office (maybe they were just humoring me on my last day). It was a great two days that felt like a charette. It was a lot of back and forth with members of the office. A great project to go out on!
